Steven Kane produces a stunning drive to help achieve an incredible fourth-place finish for the all-new Bentley Continental GT3 in its race debut at the Gulf 12 Hours of Abu Dhabi. In track temperatures well in to the 30s at the desert circuit of Yas Marina, Steven, from Ballynahinch, drove four impeccable hour-long stints in partnership with fellow British sports car racers Guy Smith and Andy Meyrick, working together as a team for the first time. Team M-Sport Bentley chose the 12-hour endurance event as the car’s test race debut, and after working with the team since the summer Steven was selected as the first Northern Irish Bentley Boy.
The 12-hour marathon was split in to two six hour races, and after qualifying the new car in fourth place Steven was chosen to start the first race before handing over to Guy Smith. After six hours and with two hour-long stints behind the wheel, Steven watched Andy Meyrick bring the car home in 3rd – a result that instantly attracted the attention of all at the Continental GT3’s first race. Steven then lead the car away for the second race and despite the team being set for a debut podium, an apparent issue with the underfloor in the last few laps meant a controlled cruise to the chequered flag to seal an impressive fourth place.
Steven comments: “What a weekend! After getting the car set up the way we wanted in the free practices, we felt like we could drive the car hard and we set some great times in qualifying. In the first race the car came to us gradually and we were able to push without taking risks. I was absolutely ecstatic that we finished the first half in third. In the second race, it was still very hot and it was really difficult to keep focused, but the car came alive as the track rubbered-in and we could really go for it. It’s a shame we had the issue with the floor right at the end, but that’s racing, and
ultimately leaving here with a fourth placed finish on both the car and team’s debut is just incredible.”
Steven’s ability to push the car hard was apparent in the lap times of the second race, with Steven setting the second fastest overall lap with a 2:12.1. Steven says: “We we’re fighting the Kessel Racing Ferrari hard for most of the second race, and in my second stint I opened the gap from 16 seconds to around 25 with the car feeling mega. The determination to stay ahead in that stint really made me focus on getting the best out of the car, and I was delighted with how it responded.”
Steven returns to driving duties for M-Sport Bentley in the New Year as the team continues its preparations for its first full season of competitive racing, in the 2014 Blancpain Endurance Series, which starts at Monza on 13th April.
